Sony knows you’re craving a great zombie movie. In fact, it knows exactly which zombie film you want to see. Following the release of the first trailer for 28 Years Later, Sony have announced that Danny Boyle’s first foray into flesh-ripping zombies is finally coming to digital platforms. First released in 2002, 28 Days Later starred Cillian Murphy as Jim, who woke up from a 28-day-long coma, to find London had been overrun by zombies. The film still stands as one of the greatest modern zombie movies ever made, introducing audiences to the terrifying Rage Zombies, who sprint towards their victims at full pelt. For years, audiences have been desperate to enjoy the horrific mutilation from the comfort of their own homes. While 28 Days Later had been kept from streaming, it’s finally arriving on digital platforms.

Sony announced that 28 Days Later is heading to streaming via a page on their official website. Titled “Go Back to Day One,” the page lets fans input their contact info to be updated about 28 Days Later‘s digital release. No official release date has been announced yet. The email updates will also include a link to pre-order the digital release when it eventually becomes available.
While digital collectors can rejoice in adding Boyle’s hit horror film to their collection, old-school analog junkies are still being kept in the dark. The announcement only covers a digital release. There are currently no plans to release 28 Days Later on Blu-ray, or as an oh, so coveted 4k remaster. Hopefully, the film will get a physical release soon, as Murphy traipsing through an abandoned London deserves the highest playback quality.
Is Cillian Murphy in ’28 Years Later?’
It’s taken almost 20 years, but Danny Boyle is back to round out the 28 trilogy. The first trailer for 28 Years Later introduced audiences to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes in the long-awaited threequel. Set to a horrifying recording of the Rudyard Kipling poem, Boots, the trailer is incredibly unsettling, and promises to be a tense fright-fest when it hits theaters next June. Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return for the new film. But where is Jim in the new trailer?

The Movie That Introduced the World to Fast Zombies Before 28 Days Later
Long before 28 Days Later, Nightmare City, released in 1980 and directed by Umberto Lenzi, amped up the speed and savagery of the zombie film.
Fans thought they saw Jim as a horrific, skeletal zombie during a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot from the trailer. The zombie looks uncannily like the Irish actor, and puts his Oppenheimer weight loss to shame. However, it has recently been confirmed that the zombie is not Cillian Murphy, so fans are now on the hunt for Jim once again. Some are speculating he could be the character in the creepy mask (even though they’re clearly female). It is more likely that Murphy’s return is being withheld until a later trailer. Or, in the spirit of an actual mystery (remember when trailers still did those?), Jim’s return might not be shown in the trailers at all.
28 Years Later releases in theaters on June 20, 2025. The movie is directed by Danny Boyle, from a script penned by writer/director Alex Garland (Civil War, Ex Machina, and 28 Days Later). It is expected to be the first entry in a new horror trilogy.
