King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are teaming up to produce a new unprecedented series for Adult Swim, and no, it’s not another King of the Hill reboot. Comedy legends Judge, a creator and writer behind hits like Beavis and Butt-Head, Office Space, and Idiocracy, and Daniels, who also worked on the American version of The Office and Parks and Rec, are back to talk about the pharmaceutical industry. Their upcoming Adult Swim show Common Side Effects is taking on big pharma in a massive way.

While the upcoming King of the Hill revival has interesting developments for fan-favorite characters and will no doubt be a labor of love, the creators have decided they want to take their talents to a bolder endeavor and tackle a sensitive topic that affects every single one of their fans. According to the new trailer, the half-hour comedy thriller series will follow two former high school lab partners, Marshall, voiced by Dave King, and Frances, voiced by Emily Pendergast, who have to figure out how to get their life-saving mushroom medicine past the DEA, big pharma, and bussiness tycoons, to the public.
Having worked on cultural commentary pieces like the sci-fi film Idiocracy and HBO’s 2014 comedy Silicon Valley, Judge is the perfect producer to weigh in on the out-of-control pharmaceutical industry. With the series co-creators Joe Bennett of Scavengers Reign and Steve Hely of Veep by their side, Judge and Daniels will hopefully also serve as fantastic co-creators and producers. ‘Common Side Effects’ Couldn’t Be More Timely
King of the Hill was a great, and hilarious, look at the typical American’s suburban life that resonated with viewers everywhere, but now Judge and Daniels are ready to take on a more specific and pressing topic for the American people. In an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen revealed his thoughts about how important the topics and questions Common Side Effects covers are.
“Joe and Steve have created something incredibly original with a series that is thrilling, beautiful and deeply funny. It’s top-level television that challenges expectations and raises profound questions. It’s a truly special series and unlike anything you’ve ever seen. I’m trying not to be hyperbolic, but it’s true.” – Michael Ouweleen via The Hollywood Reporter
Co-creators Bennett and Hely also told THR that they “hope Common Side Effects will be enjoyed by anyone who’s ever taken a pill,” which is nearly everyone in modern America. Bringing some levity to heavy topics like the American healthcare industry is genius, as it allows audiences cathartic releases of tension caused by the stressful topic, while also asking them to think about how these big corporations are making their billions of dollars.
Common Side Effects couldn’t come at a better time as awareness of mental health and big pharma increases. The series premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and will debut to audiences everywhere on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11:30 p.m. on Adult Swim with two back-to-back episodes. One new episode will be released every Sunday, and will also stream Mondays on Max.
