Despite apparently being in semi-retirement, Jim Carrey
sounds more than willing to return to some of his most beloved roles. Coming quickly following the revelation that he would consider returning for a sequel to the festive favorite The Grinch, Carrey has now offered a surprisingly promising response to the idea of coming back for another installment in The Mask
franchise.
Speaking with Comicbook.com, Carrey, who can next be seen once again as the video game villain Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, responded “earnestly” when asked what it would take to bring him back for another wild and wacky adventure as the mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss who, after finding the Mask of Loki, is transformed into the titular zany, green-faced superhero.
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.”
‘The Mask’ Was a Massive Critical & Box Office Success
Jim Carrey certainly does love to joke about the money, but the actor seems genuine when discussing coming back to the likes of The Mask and his other franchises (no doubt many would love to see another Ace Ventura) so long as the idea is good enough.
Unfortunately, this was not the case with The Mask sequel that does exist. Following on from Carrey’s first outing, which was both a critical (80% on Rotten Tomatoes) and box office success (the movie grossed over $351 million against its $23 million budget) when it hit theaters way back in 1994, Son of the Mask was released in 2005, without Jim Carrey’s involvement, and is now considered one of the worst sequels ever made.

The Farrelly brothers have apparently not stopped thinking about the Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels franchise.
While we await a possible return to the likes of The Mask and The Grinch, Jim Carrey can next be seen playing multiple characters in the video game movie sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3
. After foiling Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik twice over, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles find themselves joining forces with the mad scientist against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before.
The first reactions to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have now surfaced, with critics praising the return of the Sega icon and Jim Carrey’s gloriously over-the-top performance. @shayhbaz of The Movie Podcast heaped praise on stars Keanu Reeves and Carrey, saying “Keanu Reeves delivers depth as Shadow, while Jim Carrey cranks up the CHAOS as a double-dose of Robotnik.” While @HollywoodHandle echoed these sentiments, saying, “Keanu Reeves is the perfect casting for Shadow who is handled with great care and has a story that’s emotional and powerful. Jim Carrey’s return turns the dial up on his charismatic and energetic characteristics.”
