Sony Pictures’ upcoming Marvel movie Kraven The Hunter will be the last Spider-Man Universe spinoff film for the time being. Every other project outside of anything that directly involves Spider-Man has been canceled.
This news comes from The Wrap, which says the studio is completely focused on Spider-Man. A top talent agent said: “They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film.”
A studio insider revealed that the studio is now going to focus on Spider-Man 4, which is co-produced with Marvel Studios, as well as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. On the TV side, Spider-Noir is also going to remain a top priority.
When talking about the issues that the Spider-Man spinoffs have faced, another insider shared: “The biggest issue with the Sony Spider-Man spinoffs seems to be the lack of quality control.
“The movies just aren’t good. Sometimes that lack of quality meets a movie no one asked for, which was the case with Madame Web, and that is a no-win scenario. It may be time for Sony to start cultivating different IP to launch new franchises.”
For the most part, fans have not been happy with the Marvel movies that Sony Pictures has been releasing, so it makes sense that they would pull the plug on any other spinoff projects until they can get their shit together and learn how to make good films.
I’m sure that one day Sony will take another shot at trying to make another Spider-Man spinoff film, but as of right now, after Kraven the Hunter, the focus will be on the character Spider-Man.
